Zamzam Water: History, Benefits & Etiquette

Few things are as symbolically rich for a pilgrim as a sip of Zamzam water — a well with a history stretching back to the story of Hajar and her son Ismail (AS).

The History of Zamzam

According to Islamic tradition, the well sprang forth miraculously beneath the feet of the infant Ismail (AS) as his mother Hajar searched desperately for water between the hills of Safa and Marwah. The well has flowed continuously ever since and sits within Masjid al-Haram, near the Kaaba.

Virtues Mentioned in Hadith

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described Zamzam water as blessed, saying it is "food for the hungry and a cure for the sick" (as narrated in various Hadith collections). Many pilgrims drink it with specific intentions (Niyyah), believing that Zamzam water fulfills the purpose for which it is drunk.

How to Drink Zamzam Water

• Face the Qibla if possible before drinking
• Recite Bismillah before and Alhamdulillah after
• Drink in three breaths, as is commonly practiced, rather than gulping
• Make sincere Dua while or after drinking

Carrying Zamzam Water Home

Zamzam water is available in sealed containers at the Haram and at Jeddah airport for departing pilgrims. Airline rules on liquid baggage allowances change periodically, so always confirm your carrier's current Zamzam water policy before packing it in checked luggage.
