Performing Umrah for the first time can feel overwhelming — new rituals, an unfamiliar city, and the emotional weight of standing before the Kaaba. This guide breaks the journey into simple, manageable steps so you can focus on your worship, not the logistics.
Umrah begins in the heart before it begins in Ihram. Renew your intention (Niyyah) sincerely for the sake of Allah, settle any outstanding debts or disputes, and spend a few days before departure learning the sequence of rituals so you aren't relying on memory alone once you're in the Haram.
Before crossing your designated Miqat boundary, perform Ghusl, wear the two unstitched white sheets (men) or simple modest clothing (women), and make the intention for Umrah, reciting: "Labbayk Allahumma Umrah." From this point, the restrictions of Ihram apply — no perfume, no cutting hair or nails, and no marital relations.
Upon reaching Masjid al-Haram, perform seven anti-clockwise circuits around the Kaaba, beginning and ending at the Black Stone corner. Keep your movements calm and deliberate — crowds can be intense, especially after Ramadan and during Hajj season, so start slow and stay aware of those around you, particularly the elderly and children.
After praying two Rak'ahs near Maqam Ibrahim and drinking Zamzam water, proceed to perform Sa'i — seven passes between the hills of Safa and Marwah. Wear comfortable sandals; this covers roughly 3.5 km in total.
Men shave (Halq) or trim (Taqsir) their hair; women trim a small portion. This act formally ends the state of Ihram and completes your Umrah.
