Islam offers travelers concessions in prayer to ease the journey. Understanding Qasr (shortening) and Jam' (combining) prayers helps you stay consistent in worship even amid long flights and packed itineraries.

Qasr — Shortening the Prayer

While traveling a recognized distance, the four-Rak'ah prayers (Zuhr, Asr and Isha) may be shortened to two Rak'ahs each. Fajr and Maghrib remain unchanged. This concession generally applies once you begin your journey and continues until you return home or settle in one place for an extended stay.

Jam' — Combining Prayers

Travelers may also combine Zuhr with Asr, and Maghrib with Isha, praying them at the time of either the earlier or later prayer. This is especially useful during long flights, airport layovers, or intercity transfers between Makkah and Madinah.

Praying in Masjid al-Haram & Masjid an-Nabawi

  • Arrive early for Fajr and Maghrib — these congregations draw the largest crowds
  • Follow designated gender-specific prayer areas and directional signage
  • Keep prayer mats and belongings compact to avoid blocking walkways
  • Lower your voice during Dhikr and Dua so as not to disturb others in prayer

General Mosque Etiquette

  • Enter with the right foot and exit with the left, reciting the relevant Dua
  • Dress modestly at all times, even outside prayer times
  • Keep mobile phones on silent inside the prayer halls
